Carry a lawful harvest through an organised handover

Connect handling, identification, transport, testing and kitchen records so that the next person does not have to guess what happened.

What you will prepare

Keep the correct identification and history with each item from the field through the next responsible step.

Start this goal in three steps

A starting guide, one related situation and an editable preparation draft. Return to the full workflow below for the details.

  1. Read the starting guideGame birds after the harvest: clean handling, cooling and the journey home
  2. Try a related situationA cold-feeling cooler needs evidence
  3. Prepare your own outingReview a private checklist draft

These links do not mark a lesson read or save an answer. The checklist opens as an unsaved draft; review and save it yourself. A checklist does not establish permission or an open season.

Prepare these items and records

Use this as a starting point and add the details your outing requires.

  • Prepared clean work supplies separate from dirty equipment
  • The handling and cooling equipment chosen before the outing
  • Appropriate labels and private animal or sample records
  • Current receiving or processor arrangements and a backup plan
  • Thermometers and storage records appropriate to the next task

Before leaving

Prepare the handover before it is needed

Make the next step possible with the supplies and people actually available.

Actions to work through

  1. Choose the bird or Big game care lesson and review the relevant current health guidance before deciding what handling you can undertake.
  2. Separate clean supplies from dirty equipment and plan how identities, applicable transport information and cooling arrangements will remain with the correct items.
  3. Check any receiving or processing arrangement before relying on it, including whether the person can accept the item and what information they require.

At the site

Preserve identity while following the care plan

Avoid losing the link between an item, its origin and the next decision.

Actions to work through

  1. Apply the matching care guidance and use suitable trained help for work outside your skills, rather than improvising a procedure from a short summary.
  2. Keep each animal or bird group distinguishable and retain the information required for the actual handling, possession or transport arrangement.
  3. If a sample is relevant, register and label it through the current process, and keep the tracking record connected to its animal without sharing private identifiers publicly.

Return and handover

Transport with a traceable receiving step

Use the checked arrangement rather than assuming a map point will solve a problem.

Actions to work through

  1. Use the planned cooling equipment and a route the party can manage, keeping the handling timeline and any observations about a problem with the record.
  2. Before travelling to a sample site, read its current source entry and confirm arrangements; distinguish sample reception from carcass-disposal services.
  3. At handover, explain what the item is, which record belongs to it and what remains unresolved, then retain the appropriate receipt or submission reference.

Review and improve

Close the kitchen and reporting loop

Let storage, test status and actual cooking checks keep their separate meanings.

Actions to work through

  1. Label and organise storage using the appropriate guidance, and keep unresolved sample or health questions visible before a consumption decision.
  2. Use the current cooking reference for the actual meat category and a suitable thermometer; ordinary cooking or freezing is not a solution for CWD.
  3. Review reporting and result-follow-up tasks, store the records privately and improve one supply or handover detail before another outing.

Work through an example

Two hunters share a vehicle

The group has items from two animals and plans to stop at a receiving point. One person cannot immediately identify which sample record belongs to which animal.

  1. Pause the handover instead of guessing a matching label.
  2. Use the original private records to resolve the relationship without merging the two histories.
  3. Check the destination’s current reception instructions and any applicable transfer requirements.
  4. Record the resolved handover and leave genuinely unanswered information marked as unknown.

Use the result

A clear, truthful handover is more useful than a tidy-looking record assembled from guesses.

Questions for your own plan
  • Can another person match each item with its actual record?
  • Does this destination receive the intended sample or provide a different service?
  • Which pending result or missing observation still affects the next decision?
