WMU 936

Cooking Lake-Blackfoot — WMU 936

This recreation area has its own permit, access and no-hunting-area conditions. A wildlife licence or season match alone does not satisfy them.

  • Read the hunter information package, then obtain, print, sign and carry the Firearm Discharge Permit with your required hunting documents. This also applies to bowhunters; the park permit is not a hunting licence.
  • Motorized entry is prohibited. Do not enter cattle pastures or closed pastures; follow the permit’s maps, staging-area/shelter buffers and designated routes. No Sunday hunting is allowed under this park permit.
  • Under the discharge permit, report a harvested big-game animal to the park within 30 days of the kill. Use the current permit’s reporting instructions; this does not replace tagging or other wildlife requirements.

WMU 841

Lakeland PRA and Provincial Park — WMU 841

Separate Lakeland Provincial Recreation Area from the adjacent Provincial Park. The PRA hunting exception does not open the Provincial Park or every nearby parcel.

  • WMU 841 is defined as lands designated Lakeland Provincial Recreation Area. Verify the actual PRA/Provincial Park boundary on official maps and use the species, animal class and licence requirements in the 2026 table.
  • The current Alberta Parks chart lists no Firearm Discharge Permit requirement for Lakeland PRA. This does not replace a hunting licence, season restrictions or current site notices; older Lakeland publications may differ.
  • OHV use in Lakeland PRA is limited to designated trails; off-trail use is prohibited. Check access routes and current park advisories separately from any hunting date match.

WMU 410

Bow Corridor equipment — WMU 410

Equipment rules differ between big game and game birds. A WMU boundary also does not remove park, municipal or private-land restrictions.

  • The 2026 WMU 410 deer, elk and moose rows are archery-only: bow and arrow, not an ordinary crossbow or firearm. The actual species/class licence and any special-licence requirement still apply.
  • Game birds in WMU 410 may be hunted only with bow and arrow or a falconry bird. Do not import shotgun or crossbow allowances from other WMUs. Required bird licences and bow permits remain separate checks.
  • Check the exact park designation, municipal discharge rules, land access and local closures at your location. An archery season does not authorize hunting throughout the Bow Corridor.

WMU 212, 247, 248

Calgary / Edmonton special equipment — WMUs 212, 247, 248

Match the species, actual licence and exact season before choosing equipment. Bird rules, ordinary archery rows and named special-licence exceptions are different; WMU 212 has a specific 2026 late-elk change.

  • For upland game birds in these three WMUs, the listed methods are bow and arrow, crossbow, shotgun or falconry bird. Local discharge and land-access conditions still apply.
  • For migratory birds, crossbows and single-projectile ammunition are prohibited even here. The permitted local methods are shotgun, bow and arrow or falconry; non-toxic shot and federal/provincial licences still apply.
  • Ordinary archery-only big-game rows require bow and arrow. Named exceptions have their own conditions, including the WMU 248 white-tailed deer, Foothills deer and Strathcona antlerless-moose licences. Never borrow a bird-equipment allowance for big game.
  • WMU 212 antlerless-elk special licence, November 1–30, 2026: bow and arrow, crossbow, shotgun or a muzzle-loading firearm of .44 calibre or greater. This November restriction is not repealed by the later-season change.
  • For the December 2026, January 2027 or February 2027 period actually specified on a WMU 212 antlerless-elk special licence, a centre-fire rifle lawful for big game is permitted. This does not extend your licence period or override land/local restrictions.
  • When hunting under the WMU 212 antlerless-elk special licence, carry written landowner permission. A weapon allowance does not grant land entry.

WMU 400

Castle Provincial Park / Wildland Park — part of WMU 400

The two Castle park designations have different discharge-permit requirements. Confirm the current park boundary; neither the entire WMU nor a legacy Castle GIS outline has one uniform access rule.

  • In Castle Provincial Park, hunting including bowhunting requires a Firearm Discharge Permit. Read, sign and carry it. The 2026 guide says this discharge permit is not required in Castle Wildland Provincial Park; wildlife licences and other rules still apply.
  • The current Castle Provincial Park page says an orientation is not required. This does not remove the signed-permit requirement, the permit’s restricted areas or the applicable season/licence conditions.

WMU 438, 441, 444

Antlerless elk draw portions — WMUs 438, 441, 444

The antlerless-elk draw boundary is smaller than the whole WMU. This warning is specific to that animal class and draw; it is not a whole-unit hunting ban.

  • For antlerless elk in WMUs 438, 441 and 444, the general special-licence draw season applies only to the mapped portion. The 2026 guide expressly distinguishes the antlerless archery season, which applies to the entire WMU. Check the draw map and actual licence before choosing a location.

WMU 728, 730

CFB Wainwright — WMUs 728 and 730

Military authorities control entry. The 2026 grouse and ungulate hunts have separate instructions; a hunting licence, WMU outline or calendar match is not automatic base access.

  • Follow the current instructions for your particular hunt, assigned areas and military closures. The base can change or cancel access on short notice; never enter on the assumption that a tag or draw result grants entry.
  • For the 2026 ungulate hunt, hunters and accompanying people must sign the applicable waiver, attend required safety briefings/updates and check in and out at the Hunter Check Station every time they enter or leave.
  • The September 5–7, 2026 Ruffed/Sharp-tailed Grouse hunt requires the published military safety briefing for hunters and non-hunters. Shotgun users must use non-toxic shot; this special hunt does not authorize other species or dates.
  • For the 2026 ungulate hunt, First Nations and Métis participants following the published registration route must pre-register by November 15, 2026 and bring their confirmation. This specific process does not replace a recreational hunter’s required special licence.

WMU 732

CFB Suffield elk program — WMU 732

This is a controlled military-base elk program. The surrounding-land seasons are different from the on-base hunts; neither a licence nor a WMU match grants entry or National Wildlife Area access.

  • The on-base program requires the appropriate elk authorization. Hunters and helpers must all be at least 18; younger people are not admitted to the hunt area. Confirm current identification and registration requirements in the latest base instructions.
  • Attend the required daily registration/safety briefing and sign the liability waiver before access is granted. Late briefing arrival can prevent hunting that day. Check the latest arrival instructions; do not rely on an old time, venue or in-vehicle briefing description.
  • Military use takes priority and access can be cancelled or restricted. Remain within the area assigned by the base and complete check-out. National Wildlife Area access has additional arrangements; confirm them with the current program rather than assuming access from the elk tag.
