Bird limits, hours and equipment

Migratory hunting hours are 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. Non-toxic shot is required; crossbows and single-projectile ammunition cannot be used for migratory birds. WMU 410 allows bird hunting only with bow and arrow or falconry. WMUs 212, 247 and 248 also restrict bird equipment. Read each result’s equipment field; duck and goose combined limits do not apply separately to every species in the group.

Official guidance 1 ↗

Official guidance 2 ↗

Start with your actual licence

Alberta uses a Wildlife Identification Number (WiN), Wildlife Certificate and the applicable hunting licence. Carry required licences and tags. Bow-and-arrow hunting generally also requires a Bowhunting Permit. A special-licence season requires the matching special licence; a general licence does not replace it. First-time and youth requirements need separate checks.

Official guidance ↗

Visitors: big-game eligibility differs

Non-resident (Canadian) and non-resident alien big-game hunters need a licensed guide or Hunter Host under Alberta’s conditions. Available licences, draw access and outfitter allocations differ by residency and species. This table evaluates big-game dates only for Alberta residents; use the current Licensing section for visitor eligibility.

Official guidance 1 ↗

Official guidance 2 ↗

Bird licences and non-resident alien limits

Game Bird Licence and Wildlife Certificate requirements apply to the listed upland birds; Male pheasant also needs a Pheasant Licence. Visitors may hunt game birds without a guide, but a 2026 unguided non-resident alien licence covers only three selected WMUs and seven consecutive days. At most two can be bought per year; the second must use different WMUs.

Official guidance ↗

Migratory birds: federal permit plus Alberta requirements

Carry a valid Migratory Game Bird Hunting (MGBH) Permit with the Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp, plus the applicable Alberta bird documents. The federal permit does not replace provincial requirements. The free Youth MGBH Permit has its own adult-mentor conditions; Alberta’s under-10 licence and bag-limit rules still need separate review.
